Figure Studies
This is a selection of paintings from a Figure Study/Still Life class. I used brown kraft paper (it's big a cheap!), charcoal, white and black acrylics, and some white chalk.
Besides painting live figures - which is awesome - it was great using such contrasty media. The paintings are all pretty gestural; usually, there's a gesture drawing "stage" followed by a refinement "stage". But here there wasn't much of a separation. The media let me get forms down very fast, and well; and if something wasn't quite right, I could just paint over it. So I could really retain the looseness of the gesture throughout the whole painting, because, well, I thought it looked good! I was "refining" along the whole process.
However, you may see how this process could go in the wrong direction; out of this selection, the last one (Figure Study 2, with the 3 abstract figures) doesn't really flow well, and can get muddy in places.
All in all, a really fun way to paint!
